Logitech makes some of the best mice out there. Whether you’re looking for something for productivity or gaming, Logitech has you covered. But now it looks like Logitech is toying with the idea of a new mouse concept that could, in theory, last you “forever”.
During an episode of The Verge’s Decoder podcast, Logitech CEO revealed that the company is working on a new mouse prototype. What makes this mouse special and different is that it will get new features via software updates. This means that Logitech can introduce new features to the mouse that allow you to keep the existing mouse and not have to buy a new one.
It’s an intriguing idea, but we’re not sure how feasible it is or if there is a demand for such a device. After all, a mouse really just needs to point and click at stuff on your computer. While software features are a bonus, not everyone necessarily needs them. Plus the idea of a subscription seems kind of silly.
Also, one of the reasons people change their mice is because of hardware failures. Unless this subscription model also includes hardware upgrades, we’re not sure if this idea could take off. We can’t fault Logitech for looking into the idea, though. Subscription models are lucrative which is why many developers and companies are using them. But a mouse subscription model? We’re not sure how we feel about that, but what say you?
