It has been quite a few years since Google last refreshed its Nest Thermostat. To be fair, the old model was more than capable of getting the job done. But in case you were hoping for a newer and more improved model, Google is happy to oblige as they have announced the 4th gen Nest Learning Thermostat that comes with on-device AI capabilities.
For starters, we have to talk about its looks. Google has approached the fourth-gen model with a brand new design, giving it a more edge-to-edge look that we feel borders on futuristic. It is also slimmer with tactile feedback when you spin the dial. According to Google, this new design gives the illusion that the device is just floating on your wall.
In addition to the brand new design, Google has given the Nest Learning Thermostat some upgrades. This includes the use of a new 2nd gen Nest Temperature Sensor. Also, combined with the use of on-device AI, the new Nest Learning Thermostat can learn how to create a schedule personalized to your needs.
It can notice changes in your behavior, like if you wake up earlier or go to bed later. It can then adjust the temperature to make you feel more comfortable or to help you save on energy. The temperature sensor can also detect things like the temperature outdoors. For example, on a hot day, your home might not require additional heating. It will then pause the thermostat to help save on electricity. Users will also be able to target certain rooms during the day. If you take afternoon naps, it can set a priority for your bedroom.
Google has also improved on the overall ease of installation. The new model comes with a 12-terminal backplate that improves on overall compatibility in homes.
If you’re interested in the new Nest Learning Thermostat with AI capabilities, it is available for pre-order via the Google Store. It is priced at $279.99 and is available on the 20th of August. Additional sensors are available for purchase at $39.99 each, or $99.99 for a 3-pack.
