One of the things we liked about the Google Chromecast is how inconspicuous it was. It was a small dongle that attached to the HDMI port of your TV, allowing you to cast content from a phone, tablet, or laptop to your TV. However, it looks like it’s time to bid farewell to the Chromecast. Google has since announced its replacement, the Google TV Streamer.
We actually heard rumors of the device back in July where renders revealed what it could look like. We get that some of you might be sad to see the Chromecast go, but maybe the Google TV Streamer could be a worthy replacement. In addition to being able to cast content to it, the device acts as a hub for entertainment and smart home controls.
Streaming content
For starters, the device will provide users with access to a bunch of streaming services. This includes YouTube TV, Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, and more. Obviously you’ll require a subscription to those services to access their content.
Unsurprisingly, Google is adding AI smarts to the device. By leveraging its Gemini AI technology, users will be able to get AI summarized content of their shows, reviews, breakdowns, and more. It also supports 4K HDR with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos and comes with 32GB of memory.
Smart home features
As a smart home hub, the device is Matter compatible. This will allow you to control various smart home devices through the Google Home panel, all directly from your TV. If you own a video doorbell, you can also use it to see who’s at the door.
If you’re interested in the Google TV Streamer, it is priced at $99.99. It is available in Porcelain and Hazel color finishes. It is also bundled with an accompanying remote. Pre-orders are now live via the Google Store and will be available for purchase on the 24th of September.
