Collaborations between handset makers and other non-phone companies are pretty common. For example, Samsung launched a smartphone themed around Iron Man. In 2022, the folks at Realme also launched a Naruto-themed smartphone. So when HMD announced its Barbie Phone, we can’t say we’re too surprised.
This smartphone is the result of a collaboration between HMD and Mattel, the toy company behind Barbie and other popular franchises. Unfortunately, this is not a smartphone. This is a feature phone, kind of reminiscent of the Barbie toy phones from the past, although we guess that was kind of the point.
The handset is powered by KaiOS and even though it is a feature phone, it supports things like 4G, WiFi, and GPS. You can also access some commonly-used apps such as WhatsApp, YouTube, and Google Maps. The HMD Barbie Phone features a 2.8-inch main screen and a 1.77-inch cover screen. It is also powered by a Unisoc T107 chipset with 64MB of RAM (yes, you read that right, MB), 128MB of storage which can be further expanded to 32GB via a microSD card.
The entire UI of the phone has also been customized and themed around Barbie. It features Barbie icons, wallpapers, and ringtones. If you’re interested in picking one up for yourself, it is expected to go on sale this October for $129.
