Your Samsung phone could lose wireless charging if the company doesn’t pay up

The majority of smartphones these days support wireless charging, Samsung included. However, there is a chance that a lot of Samsung phones could lose support for the technology if the company doesn’t pay a fine. This fine was imposed by the courts which found that Samsung has infringed upon patents pertaining to wireless charging technology.

The company that sued Samsung is called Mojo Mobility. The lawsuit was filed in 2022 and it was found that Samsung’s infringement was considered “willful”. The company had apparently approached Samsung way back in 2013 to form a partnership, but Samsung refused.

Samsung is now expected to pay a fine of $192 million otherwise they might be forced to stop using the technology. Since wireless charging is also hardware based, if Samsung refuses to pay, they might issue a software update that would effectively disable the tech in their phones.

This could be huge as the phones affected are those made in 2016 until today. That’s a lot of phones that could lose wireless charging as a result. We’re not sure if Samsung has a chance to appeal this decision, but we imagine it’ll probably be easier to just fork out the money. Customers who lose access to the tech might be angry enough to file a class-action lawsuit that could end up costing Samsung even more money.
