Apple could finally step into the smart display space in 2025

Apple kind of dipped their toes into the smart home space a few years ago with the launch of the HomePod. It was essentially a smart speaker with built-in Siri capabilities that functioned similarly to other smart speakers like Amazon Echo, Google Home, and so on. Now Apple could be branching out into other areas of the smart home space with a new smart display.

This is according to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman who revealed that Apple is apparently working on two smart home devices. These devices are rumored to be powered by a new platform called homeOS. This new platform is apparently based on the foundations of tvOS, the platform that is used to power the Apple TV.

This shouldn’t be too surprising considering that the HomePod’s software is actually a forked version of tvOS to begin with. However, the creation of a new homeOS platform suggests that Apple could be looking to take its smart home efforts more seriously.

According to the report, one version of the smart display could be a high-end model with a large display attached to some kind of robotic arm that can follow the user. The other is rumored to be a lower-end model designed more for FaceTime calls and to control smart home devices. Also, unsurprisingly, these devices are expected to feature support and integration with Apple Intelligence.

Take it with a grain of salt for now, but if the 2025 launch is accurate, we’ll only have more details in 2025.
