Nintendo’s Switch Successor will Indeed be Backwards-Compatible

At this point a lot of people are just going through the motions when talking about Nintendo Switch 2 leaks – the Big N’s upcoming hybrid-handheld successor has been the subject of many leaks and predictions over the months, all with varying information regarding release dates, features, and more.

That said however, Nintendo recently confirmed that a key function of the Switch 2 will be present once the console launches. Company President Shuntaro Furukawa announced via Twitter/X that the Switch 2 will indeed, have backwards compatibility. As per his statement:

This is Furukawa. At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well. Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.

Not much else was announced in the post, although with the exception of a few systems, most of Nintendo’s consoles and handhelds have always featured backwards compatibility. Not too long ago, the company also announced the arrival of a music streaming app for Android and iOS, which lets Nintendo Online subscribers stream soundtracks from Nintendo titles.
