LG shows off its new crazy stretchable display

0

We’ve heard of foldable displays. We’ve also heard of rollable displays. But what about a display that can stretch? Turns out that such a display actually exists as LG has recently taken the wraps off its latest display technology that comes in the form of a stretchable display.

If you’re wondering why this sounds familiar, it is because LG had previously shown off something similar back in 2022. The company has since made improvements to the display tech. For instance, the new 2024 version has an increased maximum elongation rate that jumped from 20% to 40%. This means that it can be stretched even further than before.

The company has also introduced improvements to the special silicon material substrate and introduced a new wiring design structure. According to LG, the stretchable display can be repeatedly stretched over 10,000 times without any issues while maintaining good image quality. It also appears to be resistant to extreme temperatures and external shocks.

While this is pretty awesome, we’re not sure what the applications are for such a display. Right off the bat we’re thinking of wearables like smartwatches. It could also be used for smart clothing since the stretchy nature of the display could allow it to easily adapt to various body shapes and sizes. Either way, even though the commercial applications still remain a mystery for now, it is a pretty awesome piece of technology.
