By With all of the talk of Jelly Bean coming out of Google I/O, many people are still wondering one thing: “what’s up with CM9?” That would be a very good question considering we don’t even have a stable build of the Android 4.0-based ROM yet and we look to be on the verge of a Jelly Bean 4.1 code dump.
Fear not, says the blue-shaded team: pretty much any device that is receiving CM9 will be in line for CM10. The team is still working to bring CM9 out first, though. Once they have stable builds across the board they’ll be switching focuses to CM10. The jump from CM9 to CM10 might not be a lengthy one, either.
The reason CM9 took so long to be released is because the ROM had to be reworked from the ground up due to the huge change going from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich. Going from Ice Cream Sandwich to Jelly Bean should be a bit less tricky so it’s natural to expect a shorter time of completion.
To recap, the Jelly Bean version of CyanogenMod will be modeled CM10, it shouldn’t take the team long to go from CyanogenMod 9 to CyanogenMod 10, but they won’t be doing that until CyanogenMod 9 is complete (which is quite close as we’re on release candidates these days).

Now if only Nvidia and LG would release Source and the proper HALs my Optimus 2X could get both a fully functional CM9 and CM10 soon.

That raises an interesting point, since the Nexus 7 is a Tegra device. Will they give out sources fast for that?
My guess would be since it’s a Nexus device you’ll get updates just as fast as the Galaxy Nexus, etc, and the AOSP branches will reflect it accordingly. Being a Nexus device is key.

Nvidia has released sources for the Tegra2 SoC which is used in Tablets. But the Tegra 2 used for smartphones (Optimus 2X, Moto Atrix, Samsung Galaxy R…) has been left out. CM can’t work without these. That’s why there is CM9 for these devices but with many parts of the hardware not working properly.
LG stated that they would bring ICS to the Optimus 2X, so they must have the needed sources to work with. But until they release (or leak) ICS there is nothing CM can do. And LG is phucking slow with updates.

It’s RC already, so they could just wrap it up over the next 2 weeks, just in time for the JellyBean code release. They won’t be finishing stuff like the radio, but I agree they can just skip that and make sure it’s ready by the time they finish the stable version of JellyBean or something, and then if they want they can backport it to CM9.1 or something.
Seeing as 4.1 is only a minor bump over 4.0 vs going to 5.0, this isn’t too surprising. Still, this confirmation is great news, and here’s to hoping that all the proprietary bits (radio, camera, etc) that delay CM the most get taken care of sooner rather than later.
EDIT: one big question I have, though, is how much 60fps butter can they possibly bring to most old devices? the buttery smooth ui update is the #1 feature (imo), but most old devices just don’t have the hardware to keep up. Hope it at least makes a noticeable dent.
Amazing how even my 2 year-old DroidX is getting CyanogenMod10. Motorola left us at Gingerbread but the community keeps us strong with Jellybean.

I was running CM 7.2 Stable on my DX (before upgrading to an SGS3) and that thing is buggy as hell. I’m grateful that people out there are making custom ROMs, but I think they are playing a little fast and loose with the term “stable”. Constant MMS issues, battery drain issues, no Bluetooth voice commands, and a slew of other things. I actually bought the ROM Manger utility, thinking that access to the nightly builds would be of use, but it didn’t do anything for me. A rooted factory image was more stable and useful (IMHO) than CM ever was to me. The “freshness” of AOSP-based ROMs lost interest with me from that experience. I guess there’s a price to pay for staying on the bleeding edge and there’s no problem if you want to go that route. I just don’t think that the grass is always greener…
OK super stupid question here… Does CM9 have T9 search built into the dialer and contacts?

hoping that they actually get this out for the One X. Us One X owners have been left without CM9, well a proper official release of it anyways… :(
