Verizon has reported in on what overall was a pleasant Q4 and holiday season for the company. During the final months of 2012, Verizon added a record number 2.1 million postpaid subscribers while moving 9.8 million smartphones. In fact, 58 percent of Verizon subscribers are now smartphone users, and the number will only grow. Of sales to postpaid subscribers, 87 percent were smartphones.
Of the 9.8 million smartphones sold, Verizon’s CFO Fran Shammo reports that 6.2 million were iPhones. Assuming sales for Windows Phone and other platforms were marginal, that equals roughly 3 million Android phones sold (a number that seems quite small considering Android’s recent market dominance and Verizon’s history with the platform).
7.3 million LTE-enabled devices were sold. LTE makes up almost 50 percent of Verizon’s data traffic, and 23.3 percent of subscribers own a 4G-enabled device.
Overall, Verizon posted an 8.4 percent year-over-year increase in revenues, but combined operations between FiOS and wireless resulted in losses of $4.23 billion. For the year, Verizon profited $875 million.

Well I am still with Verizon because of their Canada access. But in the past 2 years they have: 1. taken away new every two, 2. taken away yearly contracts, 3. taken away early upgrades (other than the 4 month grace period they have), 4. taken away unlimited data and replaced it with something that is not even cheaper, 5. taken away the small messaging packages. And yet they keep growing…so we know in the future they will just keep doing more customer-unfriendly things because there are absolutely no consequences to them

Android has 47% of US market share, so its above 40 .Android is suffering in the USA on VZW(Not confirmed by VZW) and At&t only(No duh they were the first to carry ios). Its strong on Sprint, Tmobile and prepaid carriers. Also worldwide Android is at 79% so does it really matter

Honestly, I just left Verizon after all the reasons mkl99 posted. Mainly the unlimited data. What kind of company doesn’t allow grandfathering? That was the last straw for me. Plus, their network handles data handoffs like trash, leaving me without data half the time i click on a web link. I switched to sprint (/ignore bash) and HOLY COW all the people that trash sprint need to try network vision out. It is SUPERB! I’m getting 2mb down on 3g, and with the towers just being put up where I live I am still getting 10-15mb down on their 4g. Sure, it’s not as fast as Verizon’s…yet…(or maybe ever, who knows) but the fact is its unlimited, and its cheaper. And finally, once the iDEN network is shut down and they turn on their 800mhz spectrum it’ll be a no brainer for someone with Sprint in their area who to go with as the coverage will be >= verizons with more towers, 3 spectrums, and not to mention unlimited.
Oh, not to mention Sprints network so far handles data handoffs like a freaking champ! Driving down the highway this weekend it was switching between 3g/4g probably 3-4 times in the 2 hour drive….everytime it did the phone never hiccuped and my data stream stayed constant and never dropped. It….was….AMAZING.

Yeah, you’re grandfathered until you extend your contract. Which means no more unsubsidized phones for ya. Can you hear me now? Good.
Correct, unsubsidized…so more like limited grandfather…but there is huge speculation that they will be forcing people off unlimited with the launch of Vo-LTE…and I’m not wasting $6-700 on a phone to keep unlimited just to have verizon kick me off anyway in a couple months. And camelsnot im in the midwest and with 3 different (read: brands) phones all of them experienced data drops that lasted as long as 10 or so minutes…it was super frustrating and only got worse as the months went on.
I don’t understand this, at the bottom of the article it said Verizon lost $4+bln, then said profited $875m, how can you lose money, aaaand profit???
Profit is the money made before taxes and debt payment. So they made 875 million but had to pay 4 billion for upgrades, taxes, repairs etc.So in reality they lost -3.125 billion dollars this year

I’m sorry I’m part of that profit. Once the Nexus 4 is back in stock, though, I’ll be switching to T-mobile or straight talk or whoever-the-hell-I-want. That’s going to be awesome to be able to switch carriers every month if I feel like it.

They do have great coverage though, so for some areas, they’re the only viable option.
If you’ve been with Verizon since before they were Verizon they help you out quite a bit. But I have no idea how people can give up their grandfathered plans for a cheaper phone. Also, why join Verizon if you can’t afford it in the first place? It’s you’re fault, but whatever.

i actually save money on their share data plan with 5 phones. a lot actually and don’t come close to my data plan limit. service is impeccable in the NE and is basically the only reliable option in Sacramento. i’ve never had a problem with tower handoffs or switching from 3g to 4g, actually its much better for me than my gf on her att phone. ATT still spotty service in the outskirts and suburbs of the NYC tristate area, nevermind Tmo and Sprint. many people i know changing from att to vzw. of course i understand vzw is doing what is best for their bottom line, but it hasn’t affected me negatively yet, so i’m still a fan and customer of big red.
