After Motorola teased their anticipated wooden Moto X back cover yesterday, the first in a series of wood-grained backs is now officially available via Motomaker. The all new natural “Bamboo” wood option can now custom fitted onto a Moto X but before you rush to pick one up for yourself, keep in mind it does come at a hefty premium.
That’s right folks, at $100 on top of the normally priced Moto X, this one if for dedicated fans only. We rang up a 32GB Moto X in bamboo for a grand total of $650 off-contract and before taxes. For those looking to for a new 2-year agreement can pay a much more reasonable $250 on-contract.
Of course, Motorola’s new financing offer is always available, but even then that’s a steep price to pay for a wooden phone. Especially when sequels to many popular handsets are just around the corner. What do you guys think? Any readers out there that have been waiting to jump on a wooden Moto X? Anyone actually going to do it?
I generally don’t pay $100 for a phone never mind $100 dollars extra.
So apparently you’re using 2 cups and a string.
It’s only funny because that actually works.
no. moto x for 1 cent on Amazon during black Friday week. yes the contract comes with it, but I’m gonna have a data plan anyway so spend a penny and put the other $600 in the retirement account.
Wow. I’m happy that it’s made in America, but that’s just way too much money.
I can provide wood for much cheaper
yeah but yours is gone to fast.
Ohh myy! (George Takei voice)
It’s not like this stuff grows on trees!!!!!

Oh. Wait.
Well at least we got the ball rolling on wood backing
Chris can afford it!
Make one from Hemp & we’ll talk……………………….
Yeah, still planning on getting one when available for T-Mo.
Outta line.
My god, this is ridiculous.
Got wood?
I can’t imagine why anyone would want this, much less pay extra for it.
We’re gonna take one hell of a renewable resource that is ridiculously cheap to work with and charge $100 for it. This is Apple style shenanigans. Please don’t buy this folks. You encourage this behavior from them by supporting with your wallet. $50 was too much for a thin strip of wood on a mobile device that has a two year shelflife before being considered out of date instead of an antique.
I would say more than $35 is too much…
Mass produced bamboo cases can be obtained for less. I don’t see anything about this phone that justifies that huge of a jump in price except greed and hope that somebody buys it
I am content with the normal soft touch backs. The $100.00 asking price is a bit much for me. I understand there must be a process that goes into shaping these wooden backs to fit the phone. But, it’s not something I will pay extra for…just to say i have a wooden back.
Useless
Wow! $100 extra!
Does that come with a monthly termite treatment plan?
It’s cool, and I would have maybe wanted it when the device was relevant. We’re a couple months out from the next crop of cell phones though, so even buying a Moto X at this point doesn’t really make much sense, much less dropping an extra $100.
I’m getting another x with the wood back… because I’m rich beaaatch
Toot toot! (Chapelle’s Show credits)
Only humans write save the tree’s on paper made from cut down trees…
Too little too late. The idiots that are gonna shell out 650 for this wood accented phone will pry add a 50 dollar case that covers it up, ha.
Bamboo is fast growing and very available.
None of the woods Motorola will use are going to be rare or hard to replace. If you have the money to spend why not?
That is a slick looking phone!
I think Toast is going to have a number of real-wood backs (and fronts and maybe sides) available for the Moto X really, really soon. I don’t work for them but I have a Moto X, saw them at a craft fair a couple of days ago, and heard they’re going to release some stuff like http://www.toastmade.com/HTC_One.html for the Moto X. Another option to consider.
