The first batch of Android Wear smartwatches are finally available for purchase today. The LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live are the two lucky pieces of wrist-bound gadgetry being offered up over in the Google Play Store. We’re sad to see Motorola’s Moto 360 wasn’t ready to join the party (especially since it was the first Android Wear smartwatch revealed, and perhaps the best looking one of them all).
Now is the moment of truth: are you going to buy one? You have the LG G Watch for $230 with a nice, sleek design. The Samsung Gear Live also doesn’t look bad with its design cues borrowed from Samsung’s Tizen-based Gear lineup — it doesn’t hurt that it’s $30 cheaper than LG’s offering.
I’m personally opting to hold out for the Moto 360 simply because I can’t resist its good looks and circular design. Chris has already submitted his order for an LG G Watch in black simply because he’s the most impulsive buyer you’ll ever know. I kid, Chris.
Now we want to hear from you, so leave a vote in the poll below and be sure to let us know why you chose whichever smartwatch you’ve chosen with a comment down below!
[polldaddy poll=8148103]
It’s taking a lot of will, but I’m holding off until the 360 launches.
I’m waiting for reviews to know how good the battery life is and how good the screens are in direct sunlight.
Same here, battery life will be huge on whether or not I purchase one. The screen reviews in direct light will be big too, but the battery has to last a full day
Doing what? To me, I want all syncing on with my phone and I want to make it through the day. I was finally able to do that with the HTC One M7.
I get like 3-4 hours screen time. I also stay in a very hot city which also affects my battery life.
So I expect the battery life I get. All day for me would be always connected to my phone and constantly connected to Google Now and I only need to charge it once a day. I still will interact with it as well and my screen brightness average would be 1/3 bright.
Needs to be 3 day battery life minimum.
The path to awesome is one fraught with temptation, but still I yearn for the the Moto.
I’m holding out for the 360, but may get one of these 2 once I see reviews. Must say Samsung’s is looking better to me than LG’s
I just bought a black G watch and I can’t wait to get it!
Tempting, but I’m gonna wait for the Gear Live Prime to come out in a few months with a circular face
Two weeks after that there will be leaks of the Samsung GALAXY Gear Live 2 with beefier specs
I was considering purchasing a G Watch to give me something to fiddle with until the Moto 360 is available, but the psychological, and monetary, effects of the $249 (plus tax and shipping) price point that it is saddled with here in Canada are just too much to overcome. Now all of my smart watch attention is placed solely on the upcoming 360.
So i bought the g watch as my knock around watch. The 360 I will get later on as my fancy watch. But it depends on price how fast I’ll buy it after launch. It’s supposed to be in limited supply anyways and I’m not waiting that long to use Android Wear.
Nothing yet. I’m waiting on the reviews from you folks of the G and Gear. Tell me what to buy!
I’m not actually interested in the 360. I’ve always worn square digital watches, usually calculator watches. The round face to me just means less screen real estate.
Will never ever own a smart watch.
Save this for 5 years in the future, and see if it still holds
Give me a compelling reason to look at a tiny screen with limited capabilities for physical interaction? Next you will tell me that everyone will be wearing Google Glass type devices in 5 years. I only wear clothes, not accessories.
You can say this about a smart phone and a laptop. And people used to say laptops wouldn’t outdo Desktops.
I sense a wind of change.
You’ve never worn a belt, a tie, a wedding ring?
I don’t see anyone putting screens on belts, rings or ties. Smartwatches are not practical in any sense other than maybe fitness but we have had those devices for a while and these new watches expose the screen to damage. I just don’t understand the appeal or practicality other than something shiny and new.
I’m not going to save up for a smart watch, but i’d use it if i won one in a competition or something. I could see their usefulness and features expanding over time.
For me it’s primary uses would be for when engaging in sport activities. If I’m riding my bike I dont have to pull my phone out of my pocket, or if i’m playing basketball/shooting around, I could quickly check some messages. Using it as a remote for TV is cool.
They should bring back that nextel/boost mobile chirp for smart watch to smart watch communication when the watch isnt near a smartphone…. chirp: where you at??
Maybe that’s why you can’t see yourself wearing a smart watch, since you don’t wear watches. Fair enough
No thanks, I’ll wait for 2nd generation. But I do admit, it’s got to start somewhere
I own the Galaxy Gear, so my only option is to port over Android Wear, which I expect in 3 months.
If Samsung weren’t rolling in money i would almost feel bad for them. They spent millions in developing a new smartwatch, designed the OS. Then redesigned it only to have not so hot sales, then google comes out with their own watch OS and it’s a ton better. Even after all that, if you go by the polls, all their work didn’t give people much confidence in them either.
I don’t blame people either, it looks liek they just threw google’s OS onto the exact same watch and that’s it.
Not true. They ditched the home button!
I laughed too hard at this.
:)
Samsung killed their own watch line by making it compatible with Samsung phones/tablets only.
Today I bought the LG G watch to go with my G2 and future G3. But I plan on buying a 360 if it is not too expensive for the round face.
I plan on doing the same thing. Having multiple devices.
I currently have a Sony SW2, it’s okay but pretty limited. My main use out of it is when I’m on call, I can see my alerts at 3am without having to faff with my phone.
I’m keeping an eye on the Wear offerings, I think they will bring huge benefit. I like the idea of the OLED screen on the 360, but really it comes down to a few things:
* Price vs Functionality
* Battery Life
add an extra option to the poll, “I want one, but can’t buy any of them, because Google, once again, hasn’t made those devices available outside the US”
Google is actually improving A LOT. They are available on the Italian Play Store, € 199 each and shipping by 3 July.
in the netherlands the only devices for sale in the play store are the nexus 5 & 7, and chromecast (the last one took them over half a year to put up, at which point i had lost interest), no GPE devices, no wear watches
They’re available in the UK, £159
Never buying anything that come from Samsung.
Missing poll option: I’m never wearing anything on my wrists ever again.
Or this one: waiting for early adopter price to come down. These things will be in the $150 come holiday season
Where dat story saying, “why you won’t anymore” at?
Same here. With a smartphone always with me, a wristwatch is redundant.
No. I’m waiting to see the Moto.
But more importantly, I am waiting to see if there will be support built for it from the 2 or 3 3rd party apps I use every day. At the bare minimum I need to be able to text my wife, via Whatsapp, that I am leaving the office, without having to take my phone out of my pocket.
Looser pants and bigger pockets might be a solution to that lol
Already have a Sony SW2. Just waiting for the Moto 360 and its reviews.
If I get one it will be the moto G and after its been out a while. I need to see how rugged it is because I would likely be using it when riding. Im still not big on the everyday smartwatch.
I’m holding out on the 360. I’m also hoping that these things come to stores so I can get a hands on before I buy one. Depending on how it charges and/or how long it takes to fully charge, all day battery life isn’t a huge thing for me and I honestly wouldn’t expect it to last all day if I’m being perfectly honest with myself. It’s the screen brightness that I’m most concerned about.
Moto360 for me.
I’m waiting to see what other companies come out with, particularly HTC. Wouldn’t mind having a watch that matches my HTC One.
Don’t see any point in buying a Smartwatch. But if I were to get one, it would definitely be the Moto 360. It actually looks like a classy watch and not some plastic square piece of junk on my wrist.
The amount of 360 waiters is unreal.
I hope moto 360 has the same features as the gear 2 but the apps of the sony smartwatch 2
I’ve had mine for quite a while now, really nice automatic movement……
Meant to post this as well……
I see no need for a smart watch currently. They’re cool but I don’t need to be that connected…
The moto 360 needs to include a heart rate monitor.
Sorry but I’ve been enjoying my Gear 2 Neo for months now ;P
I’ll wait till SONY announces their SMART WATCH 3 and decide over that or the 360. GEAR AND LG kinda sucks low crappy screen resolution.
Is anyone really going to leave the phone behind in favor of an unsightly watch like this?
