Sprint HTC One M8 and E8 now receiving international WiFi calling update

HTC One M8 DSC06660

Yesterday, the HTC One M8 on T-Mobile received an update to Android 4.4.4 with the all new EYE Experience camera app and as promised, earlier today the Verizon model followed suit. Still trailing behind is the Sprint HTC One M8 and HTC One E8, 2 models that are seeing an update today — but not to the EYE Experience + Android 4.4.4.

Instead, these 2 devices — which differ only in build materials and camera hardware — are getting an update to enable Sprint’s international WiFi calling (a previous update introduced WiFi calling for the states) which enables free calling when connected to WiFi to, from, and between the US, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. The One M8 gets software build 3.30.651.2, while the One E8 gets 1.22.651.1. Here’s the full list of goodies from the changelog:

  • Google Security Patch
  • GPS Enhancements
  • International Wi-Fi Calling
  • ItsOn Integration
  • Accessibility Improvements
  • Sprint Zone Updates (HTC One E8)

You should find the update hitting your Ones starting today and rolling out over the next few days. For those that don’t feel like waiting, you can pull the update by jumping into your Settings > About phone > Software updates. Although HTC hasn’t said as much, we expect Android 4.4.4 with the EYE Experience will arrive soon after. Sit tight.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. I wonder why Sprint has to differentiate international wifi calling and domestic wifi calling when T-Mobile wifi calling has always been able to be used overseas…? Since like 2007!

  2. Just wish they would make wifi calling avaliable on all android devices

    1. It is! All you need is a Google voice number and the hangouts app!

      1. No it isn’t. Carrier based wifi calling is completely different.

  3. So international WiFi is expanded to to Puerto Rico, an vvirgin Island? TThat’s not really international

    1. This article is not giving the full details. Calls from Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands were already possible. Sprint International Wi-Fi calling ” is a free service for Android phones that gives you the ability to make and receive phone calls and send and receive texts over wireless internet connections that you may find abroad. This feature is supported around the world except for Australia, China, Cuba, India, Iran, North Korea, Singapore, Sudan and Syria.” Details taken straight from the Sprint page on International Wi-Fi calling. So it looks like it will work a lot more than what the article says.

  4. AT&T where the Hell are you? Your device is still on 4.4.2 for crying out loud

  5. And the update has been pulled. I suspect this is the reason why the HTC Eye update is still in the lab. They may be consolidating the updates.

    1. Which explains why it says their are no updates available for my device. Was looking forward to this update after fixing my phone. Had messed up while unrooting and keep launching into bootloader. Hopefully the Eye update isn’t too far off.

    2. And it’s coming OTA tonight.
