Android Be Together Not the Same Handshake video

Google’s latest ad spot centered around their new motto — “Be Together, Not the Same” — hit the net late last night. The video doesn’t feature a slew of Canadian Androids or thousands of Android devices singing in unison. None of that. It’s rather simple, showing a variety of videos from around the net in which people are engaged in their own, unique, sometimes complex handshakes. That’s about it.

Critics will point out that the video — and others like it — aren’t really showing off anything that Android can do, but that’s not the point. They’re aimed at forming a lasting impression and driving home the point that, sometimes being different is good. It means choice. And choice is something the other guys (read: Apple) simply can’t offer. Check out Google’s latest Android ad spot down below and let us know what you think.

  1. Love it. On a side note I really love the fact that all my immediate family has android phones. We all have either a HTC One, Galaxy S3, S5, Note 2, 3 or 4. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

    1. I’ve got my family setup similarly with Android phones (call me the family mobile czar) – Galaxy S5’s, Droid RAZRs, LG G2, and of course the Note 4 for me!

  3. These ads are trying to suggest that Android phones work well together when they don’t. The manufacture of Android phones can vary greatly. Its down to the developer how well a phone works on an Android phone. If the developer has developed an app on a Samsung chances are the app will work well on a Samsung but if you try the app on say a Xiaomi it is just luck how well it will work. Allowing a manufacturing free for all of Android phones, though, does make Android phones very cheap which is why Android has an 85% market share. Whether Google can really claim Android phones work well together when there is so much hardware variation is a different matter.

    1. I don’t think the idea that they work well together was the point. That’s actually almost the antithesis. The idea is that the differences in phones is a good thing. You can pick the different sizes, different specs, different brands but still be under the umbrella of Android and that choice is a great thing especially versus the droves of iphone users. The handshakes symbolize togetherness, not compatibility.

    2. I agree. It’s very easy to pair an ipad and an iPhone with an apple tv, but try to stream stuff from a phone to an ouya is almost impossible.

      Android, by virtue of its uniqueness, means that they don’t play well together.

      They should have removed that part from the adverts, as it made no sense.

      All in all, not great adverts. The animal pairs looked faked/spliced in some cases, too.

    3. That’s not really true if you are a half way decent developer and follow android guidelines. All the guidelines are designed to make apps hardware agnostic, besides minimum hardware requirements which is unavoidable in Apple as well (siri on iPhone 4 nope needed a better microphone). Apps autoformat themselves based on screen size and dpi, they even have tools to make sure things like text work regardless of language.

  4. Meh. This is the only bad one of this new campaign IMO, maybe it’s the music and not seeing much ‘different’.
    I didn’t get the constant NBA showing, but then I remembered they did have them use Glass at one point so they probably still have a few ties.

  5. This is google embracing android skins. Be different. Your not stuck on just stock.
