“Google Wallet is out, Android Pay is in.” If that’s the story you thought would come to light after Android Pay’s arrival, guess again. Google Wallet is still here, but now that Android Pay is the primary platform for mobile and wireless payments, it has a whole new purpose.
As we learned yesterday, Google Wallet will become a payments app that focuses exclusively on sending and receiving money directly to and from friends and family (or customers and merchants).
You can use Google Wallet to send money to anyone, even if they don’t have Google Wallet — all they’ll need is an email address. You can get access to your cash straight from your Google Wallet balance by using a Google Wallet card at a standard ATM, or wiring it to a debit card or linked bank account.
We’re not sure Paypal can ever be supplanted as the number one payments processor, but this new direction for Google Wallet is very exciting and we’re sure Google will give them reason to take notice. The company says more features and announcements will arrive soon, so stay tuned. In the meantime, find the download over at Google Play.
