In the last few years, there has been a major podcast renaissance. Every website, comedian, and YouTuber seems to have a podcast these days, and shows like Serial and Stuff You Should Know have achieved widespread popularity. The big problem with podcasting right now is the way iTunes dominates distribution. If your podcast isn’t on iTunes it won’t be seen by nearly as many people.
There has never been a built-in method for Android users to subscribe to podcasts. In order to listen to a podcast on an Android phone, you have to download the file locally, or get a 3rd-party app from the Play Store. There are several excellent podcast apps available, such as Pocket Casts, but a built-in solution would be better for the average person. Google is finally getting in the game.
Google has announced support for podcasts in Google Play Music. Podcasters will be able to upload their shows to Play Music, giving them access to millions of new listeners. All of the great Play Music features will now work on podcasts. Listeners will be connected to new podcasts based on what they’re doing, how they’re feeling, or what they’re interested in. There are still a lot of details left up in the air, but those should be answered in the coming months.
And yes, the Mobile Roar Podcast will be available in Google Play Music. Podcasters can visit the portal right now to upload their show.
