Googe’s Nexus Protect is a nice warranty program for folks buying Nexus devices from the Google Store, but not all Nexus devices come from the Google Store. Project Fi customers are among the few who were unable to take advantage of Nexus Protect, but thankfully that is no longer the case.
Google has launched insurance for devices bought directly through Project Fi. It works a bit differently than Nexus Protect (which gives you 2 years of coverage for a flat rate) in that it’s a monthly charge. You pay $5 per month, and that would likely cover the device for as long as you keep paying it. It’s pretty much what all the other carriers do now, so it’s not surprising Google decided to go with this pricing structure.
This price model does come with the nagging existence of deductibles, though. Should you need to file a claim for a replacement on anything other than manufacturer malfunction then you’ll have to pay $69 for the Nexus 5X and $99 for the Nexus 6P, which are totally fair prices when compared with what other carriers will charge.
Google notes that you’ll be able to add device protection up to 30 days after your purchase, so there’s no worry if you can’t get protection the moment you check out. Be sure to take advantage of the protection plan (even if you’re a safe, babying lover of all things electronic) because you never know when you might need it.
