Everyone knows how dangerous it is to text while driving, but it’s also dangerous to text while walking. Just watch this compilation video to see for yourself. In most places it’s already illegal to text while driving. One state could make it illegal to text while walking as well.
A New Jersey assemblywoman wants to ban the use of communication devices while walking on public pathways. The definition of “public pathways” could be anything from a crosswalk to a public park. If this proposal ever gets passed, the penalty would essentially be the same as jaywalking: $50 fine and 15 days in jail.
15 days in jail seems a little harsh for walking with your head down, but you’re a danger to yourself and everyone around you. The “everyone around you” part is the most important. Someone might not care about their own safety, but when they put the safety of others in jeopardy it becomes a much bigger problem. Walking blinding across the street can cause major accidents.
What would you think about a law like this? Do you feel the punishment fits the crime? Should texting while walking be illegal everywhere?
