Motorola planning to equip another Moto X with a shatterproof display this year

Last year Motorola launched a total of 3 different devices under their “Moto X” brand of handsets: the Motorola Moto X Force, Motorola Moto X Style (Pure Edition in the US), and the Motorola Moto X Play. Each device offered something a little different and while the Moto X Style (Pure Edition in the US) was considered the company’s true flagship, the device that offered the most cutting-edge hardware was the Moto X Force.

As we later learned, Verizon would quickly nab the exclusive on the X Force here in the states, re-branding it as the Motorola DROID Turbo 2. The device offered a better (but still controversial) Snapdragon 810 processor along with ample 3,760mAh battery. But its easily most talked about — and well-tested — piece of hardware was a shatterproof display. Built using a unique 5-layer technology, the Moto X Force/Droid Turbo 2 opted for a plastic display instead of more traditional glass, something Motorola called “ShatterShield.” It looks like this interesting display tech could once again make a return for 2016.

According to hellomotoHK — the same folks who leaked those Moto X 2016 renders over the weekend and countless other Motorola leaks in the past — the “New Moto Flagship” will feature an “AMOLED & ShatterShield Screen.” They didn’t clarify which model, but they did provide a photo of the display itself. There are no markings showing it’s any different from a regular glass display, so we’ll just have to take their word for it.

Still up in the air is if Motorola is planning a 3rd, even higher-end model, or if they’ll simply outfit that rumored Moto X Vector Thin variant with the unbreakable display. Last we heard, Lenovo and Motorola could be thinning out the Moto X line this year with only 2 variants (vs last year’s 3), but nothing has been confirmed.

Although not everyone is sold on the idea of a modular design, Motorola and Lenovo could have the chops to pull it off. In a world where every smartphone OEM is offering more of the same, it could be just what Motorola needs to stand out.
