One of the spec features of the OnePlus 3 that most people are excited about is the 6GB of RAM embedded in the device. While 4GB of RAM is the base standard for flagship devices in 2016, 6GB should theoretically give the OnePlus 3 a leg up on the competition when it comes to multi-tasking. Unfortunately, that theory doesn’t seem to hold up based on the speed test video embedded below which pits the OnePlus 3 against the Exynos-powered Samsung Galaxy S7.
The test is pretty simple: both devices are timed as the user sequentially opens applications in two rounds. The first round shows how fast the devices are able to load apps the first time, while the second round shows how well the device hold apps in memory. The Galaxy S7 made it through round one in a minute and one second, with the second round taking only 33 seconds. The first round on the OnePlus 3 was ten seconds slower than the Galaxy S7 at one minute and eleven seconds, but the second round was abysmal with a time of one minute and ten seconds. As you can see from the video, the OnePlus 3 needed to reload every time app in the second round and wasn’t even able to keep a web page inside of Chrome in memory.
We can’t imagine that the OnePlus 3 is using all 6GB of RAM in this test, so the issue is likely due to aggressive memory management built into the phone’s software. Hopefully, the OnePlus software engineers will be able to tweak things within the next few weeks and push out an update which will allow OnePlus 3 owners to fully enjoy the advantages of owning a smartphone with 6GB of RAM.
