After being unveiled last Summer and launching in November, the ASUS ZenWatch 3 has not really seen much fanfare, with the smartwatch market seemingly waning. In fact, things have gotten so rough for ASUS’ smartwatch division that a new report is claiming the company will be exiting the market.
According to the report, ASUS is only shipping between 5,000 to 6,000 units per month, which is pennies compared to Apple’s 3.5 million units which shipped in Q1 2017. The ZenWatch 3 definitely turned some heads, but it seems that there wasn’t enough to warrant a continuance in a dying market.
This might be a good time for ASUS to reallocate its sources, and possibly work on a new fitness wearable to take on the likes of Fitbit and Samsung’s Gear Fit lineup. It would be a shame if ASUS exited the market altogether, but it’s not all that surprising considering the struggles Google has seen in getting Android Wear 2.0 onto last-gen smartwatches.
