We’ve been waiting for the arrival of the in-display fingerprint scanner from Samsung for quite some time. We figured maybe it could happen with the Samsung Galaxy S9, but we now know that device simply opted for more optimal placement of a rear-facing component than entirely new tech.
And now, a report from KGI says to expect much of the same for the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. The original KGI analyst who predicted the Note 9 to have it, Ming-Chi Kuo (who has a pretty good track record, by the way), reversed their stance after rumors came out debunking their earlier claims.
As we typically hear with this sort of waffling, Samsung really wants the tech for the future of their smartphones, however it simply hasn’t matured enough to place inside their most important consumer electronics product. Even their own technology firm’s attempt at the tech isn’t good enough yet.
We can appreciate the company’s willingness to delay its arrival for the sake of putting out a quality product. It’s especially important for Samsung to ensure their components are behaving properly so as to not spoil the forgiveness bestowed upon them after the Galaxy Note 7’s demise.
So we’re back to the original question: when? We don’t know, but apparently, Samsung believes that fingerprint sensors remain necessary in smartphone tech, and so it sounds like they won’t be giving up on it easily. Perhaps we’ll be lucky enough to find it inside the Samsung Galaxy X, but we’ve learned by now not to hold our breath too long.
