As is becoming increasingly the norm these days, we have seen quite a bit of the OnePlus 7 Pro prior to the official launch today, but as always there are a few extra tidbits that we picked up during today’s event.
Cameras
OnePlus 7 Pro is using a triple camera setup with an ultrawide (117 degree) 16MP f/2.2, the 48MP Sony IMX586 f/1.6 with OIS is the primary and a 3x telephoto 8MP f/2.4 with OIS. The camera offers three autofocus methods with PDAF, CAF, and Laser AF. For those that like DxOMark, the camera received the second highest score ever with 111. That is behind only the Huawei P30 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G at 112.
The OnePlus 7 Pro also keeps pace with the market on video performance with 4K at up to 60fps and 1080p at up to 240fps.
The front-facing camera on the OnePlus 7 Pro uses a small pop-up mechanism, like the Oppo Reno, to avoid a notch or hole-punch on the screen. And it is also designed to retract immediately if it senses a drop. OnePlus claims it will stay strong through 300,000 openings and closings, which should get even the most avid selfie-takers through years with the OnePlus 7 Pro.
Display
OnePlus calls the display for the OnePlus 7 Pro a Fluid AMOLED, with the Pro featuring a 6.7-inch screen at 3120 x 1440, which is an impressive 516ppi. The 90 Hz refresh rate should keep everything smooth on the display, while the 800 nits max brightness and HDR10/10+ support will enable a wide range of vibrant color. Slightly ridiculous naming convention aside, this display should be among the best on Android at launch.
Body
The pop-up camera is probably the most notable feature of the OnePlus 7 Pro just to look at it, otherwise, it features curved back and front panels and thanks to the in-display fingerprint reader there’s nothing else on the exterior of the phone beyond the camera lenses.
The phone will come in three colors, at launch it’s just Nebula Blue and Mirror Grey, but an Almond option will be coming later.
Internals
Naturally, the OnePlus 7 Pro is using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 like pretty much every flagship this year with an Adreno 640 GPU. The top option now offers 12GB of RAM with a boost mode to speed things up even further, while you can save some cash by going with the 6 or 8GB variants.
The OnePlus 7 Pro will be the first phone to ship with UFS 3.0 memory, making for up to 9x faster read and write times.
They have bumped the battery up to 4000 mAh, promising over a day of battery life with “Warp Charge 30” charging first seen in the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition, which will take you from 0 to around 50% in just 20 minutes. Worth noting this requires the OnePlus charger as it isn’t standard USB-C PD.
Finally, there are stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos on OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7.
Oxygen OS
The company has committed to 2 years of Android version updates and 3 years of security patches for the OnePlus 7 Pro.
Screen recorder is one big addition coming natively to Oxygen OS, to enable you to capture gameplay or tutorials easily.
Gaming mode is another big addition for them which can put your phone into a special do not disturb mode and will prioritize performance.
When you are looking to avoid being disturbed by your phone itself, Zen mode is a 20-minute break from your phone that will only allow phone calls or photos.
Pricing
The specs warrant it, but perhaps the biggest leap that OnePlus is taking with the 7 Pro is the pricing, with a $120 jump up from the base price of the OnePlus 6T. The OnePlus 7 Pro is available May 17th at 10 a.m. Eastern via OnePlus.com or at T-Mobile starting at $669 for the 6GB RAM/ 128 storage model, just $30 more gets you 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage, while bumping up to the top of the line 12GB RAM and 256GB of storage will cost you $749.
