The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 isn’t ready for prime-time

During today’s Samsung Unpacked 2020 event, the Galaxy S Fold 2 was not unveiled alongside the Galaxy Note 20 series smartphones. While the phone didn’t make its official debut, Samsung did tease is a little, giving us a look at what’s to come.

Samsung isn’t quite ready to talk about the phone’s internals or the fine details of the Galaxy Z Fold 2’s specifications, but the tease does give us a look at the design changes we can expect from the new device. The most noticeable difference between the Galaxy Fold and Fold 2 is the exterior display which has been upgraded to a 6.2-inch panel which practically covers the entire front of the device. This change will make the phone a lot more usable as… a phone. Imagine that! The display has small hole-punch cutout for its front-facing camera.

The same has been done on the inside, removing the massive notch that you couldn’t unsee on last year’s model. The interior display has also be upgraded with a much thinner plastic bezel that’s barely noticeable.

While we’re not sure what the thickness of the new Z Fold 2 is, the images make it look significantly thinner than last year’s model. As a result, the hinge cover on the outside of the phone is more rounded, allowing the device to look much sleeker when folded. The thinner design of the phone’s body does mean that there is a significant camera bump for the triple cameras on the back of the phone, but that’s par for the course these days.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be making its debut at itw own event in September. While the original Galaxy Fold sold for $1,980, we’re really hoping that Samsung will be able to bring that down a bit now that its had some time to work on the folding display technology. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 for $1,600 would be really compelling, but we doubt they’d price it that low.
