Holding off on that Dell Streak purchase due to it still being on Android 1.6? You may have reason to turn that frown upside down and turn that wallet inside out. The Android 2.1-based build of Dell Streak’s firmware has been leaked online. It’s said that this build is newer than the ones we’ve seen in videos, but we’re not sure if this build is final or near-final.
Users over at Modaco’s Forums – where the leak was originally posted – are reporting no noticeable issues (in fact, they have nothing but positive remarks). You can download the file you need here (we suggest using this mirror found deeper within the thread as the original link is a very slow download), and look below for the instructions after you’ve gotten it (written up by yours truly).
- Download the .pkg file and rename it to Update.pkg
- Transfer Update.pkg to the root directory of your microSD card.
- Shut the device off. While holding the volume up or down buttons, turn the device back on.
- You should now be in recovery mode. Select the second option.
- Wait, then wait some more, and you’re done! Let the phone reboot and enjoy Android 2.1 on your new Dell Streak.

[Update]: That previous file was only reportedly working for the UK version of the Streak, but an AT&T version is now available. Head on over to StreakSmart for more details.

Hopefully, Dell will be prompt in updating and keeping up to date with the latest versions of Android.
It’s looking good so far and lets see if Froyo and Gingerbread come over.
How about a leak that unlocks it from AT&T. Really if they wanted to sell the units it would be able to use Tmobile AND AT&T.
Android 1.6 + AT&T = Fail
Dell should be launching with no less than 2.1 and 2.2 shouldn’t be far behing for a new product. Too much competition in the marketplace to enter with a new product line with an antiquated OS. Dell should also learn from Apple that carrier exclusivity is not a savvy market strategy, particularly when the exclusivity exists with the arguably worst carrier.
Wow, it’s looking more and more like Android will become the ‘Windows’ of the mobile devices. This Dell device does look pretty awesome. One day soon you will see 90+% of the phones in the world with Android and apple with its piddly 3-4%. Once that happens, apple will be a thing of the past http://bit.ly/duginQ
Wow, do you guys read before you post stuff?
“That’s probably how a Modaco member unearthed the Dell Streak’s latest Android 2.1 build (apparently just for locked O2 devices)”
Doesn’t work on US version. :(
Thank you for the instructions.
I have come to the dark side (android)…i order my dell streak on Thursday, cant wait for it to come. i am breaking up with my iPhone. I had all 4 iphones for the past 3 years, giving my new iPhone 4 to my wife she is soo happy but wait till she see’s my STREAK!
does android 2.1 have Tethering?
It doesn’t have built in tethering but with the one-click Universal Androot (for rooting in 5 minutes or less) and Barnacle you can still wi-fi tether for free. 2.1 has made our AT&T Dell Streak a whole different animal, we’re very content to wait until a 2.2 ROM shows up.
