Huawei’s foldable efforts haven’t been going as well as Samsung’s. The lack of Google services and the heftier price tag is certainly not doing the company any favors, but that could change this year.
A report from DigiTimes claims that Huawei is apparently set to release not one, not two, but three foldable phones this year, and that they will be affordable. According to DigiTime’s industry sources:
“The Chinese smartphone vendor is likely to adopt more friendly pricing, targeting the entry-level segment to spur demand for foldable smartphones, said the sources.”
We’re not sure what they mean by “friendly pricing”, but as it stands, foldables are about 2-3 times the price of a base flagship smartphone, so bringing it down to the price of a flagship could certainly go a long way in encouraging adoption. Interestingly enough, Huawei won’t be alone in flooding the market with foldables.
A recent report suggested that Samsung is also expected to be aggressive with its foldable phones this year. We could be looking at features like support for the S Pen and maybe even an official IP rating.
We have to wonder though, with Huawei’s current situation regarding Android and Google, is it a smart choice to launch so many foldables with software that’s limited? Even if they were to launch it with HarmonyOS, would customers be willing to give a somewhat unproven platform a try? What do you think?
