New GAPPS for T-Mobile G2 Has New Google Voice Widget, More Launcher Customization

14

We’ve already seen the latest and greatest that Google’s GAPPS package has to offer with current custom ROMs such as CyanogenMod, but the one being shipped with the T-Mobile G2 holds an even bigger punch: a new Google Voice widget. The build was found within the same firmware we saw leaked the other day for the yet-to-be-released device and flashed smoothly right over the latest CyanogenMod6 nightly build (approach with caution on other ROMs and other versions of CM6).

While it may be quite small in scope (it’s just a gateway to the same Google Voice app we know and love now), it’s still pretty cool. At a glance, it shows you how much money you have in your Google Voice account to use for cheap international calls. It also gives you a set of 4 buttons to access various features within the app.

Other goodies include the ability to customize the buttons next to the application drawer buttons (ala LauncherPro or ADW Launcher), but we aren’t hearing reports of anything else new at this time. Anyone out there tried this out on their phones yet?

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. That’s cool. I can’t use Voice internally (I live in the UK) but if I were to make international calls, it’d be great. Especially on holiday – as long as I have wifi access, I can talk to someone at home for $0.02 a minute – amazing!

  2. NEED VOIP FOR GV!!

  3. Thanks Quentyn.

This makes me want to void my warranty and root my Nexus right now but of course if this is a new update then I won’t have to wait long to get it with my phone. I have a feeling that these features are going to be available for all 2.2 phones via the market. :)

  4. Currently if you have Launcher Pro and add the Google voice icon at the bottom, it lets you toggle between call settings for Google voice. It’s a really awesome feature.

This looks like it is along the same lines.

  5. I hear that you can now make free US & Canadian calls with voice thru gmail on your desktop browser. I wonder if this is implemented in the gmail app on Android?

  6. @ shawn1224, “There’s an App for that”

  7. @jdog you don’t need to void your warranty to root your nexus. Just use universal androot and you’ll be good to go.

  8. @androidftw is there an app? I tried looking the other day but couldn’t find one. I figured since they just rolled it out that it would be too much to ask for native android integration already

  9. Sweet thanks Samuel Maskell.

  10. I have in running on my nexus but there are still bugs. The launcher is really nice. This also comes with the htc sense CALIBRATE feature. I myself think it makes a big difference but others argue it doesnt. Ill send you guys an email of a screenshot.

  11. You can’t make “gmail calls” (for now) on any mobile phone including android phones as it requires a Windows only plug in.

  12. The plug in is not “Windows only”. It works on Mac too.

  13. There is also a plug-in for Linux systems using the .deb package format. RPM support is coming soon.

I’m not talking about the google voice app. I want to be able to make calls without utilizing my minutes through a VOIP or similar technology to what is being implemented in the gmail desktop browser experience (just wanted to clarify that). But yes, others have answered the question.
