Shortly after releasing an anticipated Android 2.1 update for the T-Mobile Pulse, TMo UK has decided to retract the new firmware in light of negative feedback. And what might be responsible for the poor reception? According to Huawei it has a whole lot to do with T-Mobile UK releasing an unfinished build of Android 2.1 without the go ahead from the manufacturer. For now TMo is suggesting you go ahead and download and install the previous Android 1.5 update released last December. Shame, shame.

Wow. What the hell. This seems to happen to way too many update rollouts. The manufacturers/carriers say they delay updates because they want to optimize the user experience or work out the bugs. What a load of crap. Its stunts like this that will hold android back. One thing Apple has going for it is once they release an update, its solid enough to use lol.
Apple has to write updates for basically 6 devices (iPhones, iPod Touches). Android comes mostly driverless, and every screen, processor, coprocessor, memory setup, network card, Bluetooth card, etc has it’s own stack. What a pain to test.
Also, bundling updates as one .zip file is arcane. If the network driver is faulty, an auto-update addressing that would make more sense. Sure, you can do an update of one device driver through update.zip, but Android 3.0 really needs more subtle update provisions.

But A.B Dada, this update was sent out by one carrier to one phone. I understand fragmentation is an issue, but why was this update ever sent out? It’s not like they were rushing to make it the first 2.1 handset or something. 2.1 came out over half a year a go.
T-Mo hss still saying they will have an update for the MyTouch 3G, but they’ve been saying that for how long now?
I’ve completely lost confidence they will ever do so.
Personally, I am starting to see a trend here. Since it is much more profitable to sell customers new phones than provide software updates for free, I see this continuing as they release unfinished software and keep failing on promises made to their customers. Ultimately, I see TMobile being bought out by some other provider. In the transition process, I see a super nightmare for current TMobile customers which will result in those customers leaving the company which will further consolidate the wireless market.
