Soon you’ll be able to ask Google Assistant to power off your smartphone

Google Assistant is a great digital assistant. You can get it to do all kinds of things, like turning your lights on or off, searching for information like directions to a location, the weather, sports scores, and more, but it seems that Google is adding one more trick to it – shutting your phone off.

Right now to turn off your smartphone, you would have to press and hold the power button and then power it off. That’s fine and that’s the way we’ve been doing it for decades even with feature phones, but an APK teardown by 9to5Google has discovered that Google will soon let you turn off your phone using your voice.

This means that if for whatever reason you can’t access your phone immediately, you can launch Google Assistant and say, “Power off” and your device will turn itself off. It might sound like peak laziness, but we think that this will be a great tool for those who might have issues with accessibility, like they might not have full use of their hands and need an alternative way of powering their phones off.

Right now the feature is obviously not live so don’t look for it yet, but given that it was spotted in the APK, we imagine that its launch shouldn’t be too far off. In the meantime, what other cool features or actions would you like to see come to Google Assistant next?
