Up until the last year or two, OnePlus was at the head of the pack when it came to Android updates. Since then, the landscape has shifted, as Samsung has taken the lead as it continues to be one of the first phone makers to release the monthly software security updates. Even with the update to Android 11, Samsung did a full-sweep of its devices early in 2021, bringing the latest features of Android to a slew of devices across varying price points.
Giving OnePlus some credit here, CEO Pete Lau took to the OnePlus Forums to announce a “New Journey for OnePlus”. This “journey” includes further integration with Oppo after the two companies merged their hardware R&D teams earlier this year. But this time, more teams will be merging in an effort to bring “faster and more stable software updates” for current and future OnePlus devices.
I’m confident that this change will be positive for our community and our users. With this deeper integration with OPPO, we will have more resources at hand to create even better products for you. It will also allow us to be more efficient, for example, bringing faster and more stable software updates for OnePlus users.
The Oppo and OnePlus teams working closer together isn’t entirely out of left field, given that both companies are owned by BBK Electronics. This just could be a merger to enhance resources, without stretching the OnePlus team farther than it already is.
Lau was also quick to point out that the OnePlus brand will “continue to operate independently”, which should squash any potential rumors of OnePlus and Oppo merging together entirely. At least for the time being.
As for the OnePlus brand – we will continue to operate independently, focused on providing you with the best possible products and experience as we have always done. We will continue launching OnePlus products, holding events (hopefully in person soon) and engaging directly with you for feedback through the same OnePlus channels as before. OnePlus’ commitment to you remains the same.
We’ll have to see how everything plays out for OnePlus and Oppo, and whether this merger will actually improve software updates. With budget devices like the OnePlus Nord N200, we hope to see more than one major software update, and maybe this will help OnePlus right the software ship.
