Although the excitement and popularity of Clubhouse has died down in recent months, the company is still churning out new updates. Back in May, the Android app finally launched and in June, Clubhouse announced that the invite system would be tossed away.
Well, the day has finally arrived, as Clubhouse detailed in a blog post. The antiquated invite system designed to keep servers from being overloaded has finally been ditched.
The invite system has been an important part of our early history. By adding people in waves, welcoming new faces each week in our Wednesday Orientations, and talking with the community each Sunday in Town Hall, we’ve been able to grow Clubhouse in a measured way, and (mostly 😬 ) keep things from breaking as we’ve scaled.
This comes a week after Backchannel was introduced as a new messaging system within Clubhouse. Think of it as DMs for Clubhouse, as you’ll be able to message various Clubhouse members, without creating an actual group call.
Included in the blog post, the creators detailed the journey of the app up until today. Since January, the Clubhouse team has grown from just eight employees to almost 60. There are around 500,000 rooms daily, and Clubhouse has added 10 million members just since the app arrived on Android.
It’s been a rollercoaster first half of the year, and we’ve emerged much bigger than we were in January. Our team has gone from 8 people to 58. The number of daily rooms has grown from 50k to half a million. We’ve added 10M people to the community since we launched Android in mid-May, and seen 90M DMs sent since we launched Backchannel last week.
According to Clubhouse, the update removing the invite request system is rolling out to both Android and iOS users starting today. Apparently, we’ll also be seeing “big new updates” arriving ‘every 1-2 weeks”.
It will be interesting to see what kind of updates arrive in the future, as Clubhouse continues to feel the pressure from Twitter Spaces, and even Spotify’s new Greenroom service.
