You will soon no longer be able to block shortcodes on T-Mobile

Have you ever received a message from a shortcode number before? If you have, you’re not alone. Shortcodes are used by companies to send out mass SMS or MMS to alert you to promotions, upcoming events, and more. It can feel spammy at times and annoying, that’s why T-Mobile actually allowed users to block and blacklist all shortcodes.

Unfortunately, this created more problems for carriers who reportedly received many calls from irate customers who could no longer receive 2FA codes from banks and online services. This is because these companies also use shortcodes to send out these codes, and blocking all shortcodes means blocking them too.

Now according to a report from The T-Mo Report, they’ve gotten their hands on an internal memo that has revealed that towards the end of the month, T-Mobile will actually be disabling the feature. The carrier is expected to reach out to customers in the next few days to inform them of the change, with the change coming into effect between the 31st of August to the 2nd of September.

For those who have enabled the feature for a very long time, you might be upset as it means that all shortcode messages will start flooding your inbox, but for those who have left it as it is, then there is no change for you.
