How cool would it be to jailbreak an iPhone using an Android phone? Alright, I’m already getting off topic, but you can jailbreak your PlayStation 3 using an Android phone. This method follows the news that one hacker was able to find a way to jailbreak (or – with more contextual relevance – mod) your console with nothing but a USB drive. He was selling that solution for $150, but this one is completely free if you already own an Android-based handset.
You can click here to find instructions on how to do this, and a list of compatible phones can be found here. Not all phones are supported, but they have a list of devices which they’re targeting and it’s possible more will be added over time. I’ll be trying this out with my T-Mobile G1 as support for the EVO 4G I own isn’t yet finished. After you’ve done it, it’s up to you to find out what you can do with a newly-jailbroken PS3. Google‘s calling your name.
[Update]: As one commenter pointed out, it’d be rather irresponsible for us not to warn you of the potential dangers of doing this. Not only do you risk the working health of your console or phone (not likely, but possible with any hack like this), you also risk losing the ability to play games online. Sony does have the ability to block your entire console from ever signing into the PSN, and they’ll use that if you’re caught (even if what you’re doing isn’t illegal, I’m sure they’re protected in their terms of use that you agreed to). If you’re not worried about your ability to play online, then this warning doesn’t fully apply to you. I still urge caution when doing anything like this, though.
[Thanks, Belec!]
No droid x on the list. :(
once this is finished for the Evo, Then I will be happy!
PS: Glad I could be of service!
wow awesome!! can’t wait to try this out with my Samsung Galaxy S ^^
yeah, good question. what can you do with a “jail broken” PS3? what is it being broken from? is this offering the ability to play 360 games? if so, im down. then i wont need to get another 360 to my xbox games(pawned mine a while back.)
I’m sure you’ll be quite surprised with the newfound functionality after doing this. I feel wrong just saying it, so I won’t.
Not certain if any of this has been debunked, but Phandroid recommends we use Google to search for what we can do with our Jailbroken PS3’s, but fails to mention ANY of the information listed here:
http://gizmodo.com/5619979/using-your-jailbroken-ps3-online-will-send-the-sony-cops-your-way
Inform your readers to take caution and set the PSN to not log on automatically so they don’t end up screwed. This may be a good idea to play free Single Player games, but no go online.
if by jailbroken you mean bieng able to add a different internet browser(Gchrome or IE),messenger service(aim, facebook chat,or msn), or any other then im down
@jhon with a jailbroked PS3 you can run your “backup” games. You know those backups made from the originals disc, nobody wants a original game disc scratched. Remember the piracy is bad. ;)
Crazy stuff, but a lot of bother involving your phone for anybody to use regularly. It’s nice to see people constantly looking for new things to do with Android, but after reading the steps it sounds like something that would be done better from a laptop running Linux.
Finally a reason to buy a PS3, it looks nice sitting next to my jtag xbox360.
Thank you, Quentyn. I fully understand your thought process behind posting it the way you did. Understandably, PS3 and other game owners are ALLOWED to secure “BACKUPS” of games they have rightfully paid for, however the method used to play them may not be covered under the agreements.
While I also understand Phandroid has a NO-PIRACY policy as far as it’s postings go, this article is in direct comparison to that issue. While we cannot ignore that one point of Piracy, this is still a huge leap and awesome Android related news.
I wish that I brought my PS3 with me to college :(
I Guess i dont understand what i would do with it. Im a rooter myself and a ps3 gamer but what does this allow me to do extra?
@Rob
Thats a fake ps3-hacks.com posted the same story but it was found to be fake.
Play back ups from the hard drive with no disc required, possibly reinstall Other OS, possibly play ps2 games. Quite a couple of things. But I would recommend getting a bigger hard drive if you plan on storing your library of games on the hard drive.
Yea to play more PS2 games and the Other OS that Sony decided to do away with. Those 2 would be a big help.
Its sad the older PS3 version had more backwards compatibility for PS2 games.
Thank goodness I have a Droid. If the Nexus One can do it, I can see it being done with the Droid soon.
@2FR35H I understand the initial story to be “fake”, but there is still acknowledgement that SONY will be potentially banning PS3 MAC addresses which will cause people to have to buy a new PS3 to play online.
Eh, unless Sony can scan external hardware devices or software leftovers on the system, you could just use it without sign into the PSN. Have 2 hard drives. One will contain the PS3 jailbreak along with all the games you backed up and the second hard drive would just be regular so you can go online. I’ve never switched hard drives yet on my PS3 so I don’t know if it’s easy as it sounds.
Wish you could just use a regular windows pc. Seems like it would be easier, plus mine is siting next to the ps3 anyway.
Well, new firmware just popped out for the PS3, so I’m assuming this is no longer a going jailbreak method whether the story is real or fake. Oh, well.
Yeah new 3.42 firmware said to stop jailbreaking through USB. But if you where going to use the jailbreak doesnt really effect, as you wouldn’t of updated anyway.

Eh, unless you can find a way to update your firmware to 3.42 you either aren’t going online again or are going to lose your hack buddy.
And to think that you thought you had it all figured out :)
This is coolish…wonder if a Android phone can jail brake a Xbox?
can u use the samsung acclaim? thnx for response
Alguien sabe si funciona el samsung i637 ¿

The Xbox360 and the Playstation three have been doin’ nicely, but Microsoft and Sony see the Nintendo Wii doing better, and they’re after a piece of the motion gaming action
