Telegram is a leading instant messaging application that has made a good name for itself. It is widely considered as one of the best WhatsApp alternatives for those looking to move away from Facebook (now Meta). Both apps need your phone number to register an account but one major difference is you do not necessarily need to share your phone number to connect with people on Telegram.
The app lets you set a public username and hide your phone number from others. This helps in maintaining privacy and prevents your phone number from falling into wrong hands like online scammers and harassers. It is specifically beneficial while joining Telegram groups where you would not want unknown people to know your phone number. So without ado, let’s get started with this easy-to-follow tutorial.

Hide your phone number on Telegram:
- Launch Telegram on your device and tap the hamburger icon in the top left corner.
- Tap Settings to access app settings.
- Choose the Privacy and Security option from the list.
- Tap Phone Number and choose either My Contacts or Nobody.
There is a minor difference between the two aforementioned choices. The first one i.e. My Contacts will hide your phone number from everyone except those who already have it saved in phone contacts. If you want your phone number to be hidden from everyone, then you need to choose the Nobody option. This setting has an additional option to choose who can find you on Telegram using your phone number. You can choose whether everybody or only your contacts can find you.
