When you send a file over WhatsApp, it goes through the company’s servers first before it is downloaded onto the other person’s device. Given how fast our internet speeds are these days, sending photos is almost instant, but sometimes it can take a bit longer when uploading larger files like videos.
WhatsApp now appears to be testing out a new feature where they will show users an ETA when the file is being uploaded to their servers, as you can see in the screenshot above courtesy of WABetaInfo.
Like we said earlier, smaller files like photos are generally pretty fast when uploaded to WhatsApp’s servers, but with the company reportedly planning on expanding max file size capacity to as large as 2GB for documents, having an ETA would be useful so users know how long they have left before a file is fully uploaded.
That being said, this test appears to be limited to users in Argentina so if you don’t see the feature yet and you’re using the latest WhatsApp beta, don’t worry because you’re probably not part of the test. We’re not sure when WhatsApp is expected to roll out these changes, but presumably as it is in testing, hopefully it won’t be too long before it will be available to all users.
