The wide availability of fitness-tracking apps and devices has made it a lot easier for users to keep an eye on their health and overall well-being, thanks to the smart integration of software and hardware. However, we have yet to see an official “central hub” of sorts when it comes to integrating multiple sources of data into a singular, easily accessible format.
With that said, a recent press release from the Android Developers blog has announced that Google is working on Health Connect, an API and platform which will allow developers to securely access and share health and fitness data across Android devices. The API is a result of combined efforts between Google and Samsung.
Health Connect will support activity and health stats like sleep, body measurements, heart rate, and blood pressure data, among others.
According to the release, “…Users will have full control over their privacy settings, with granular controls to see which apps are requesting access to data at any given time. The data in Health Connect is all on-device and encrypted. Users will have the ability to shut off access or delete data they don’t want on their device, and the option to prioritize one data source over another when using multiple apps.”
Additionally, Google has been working with apps and developers which include MyFitnessPal, Leap Fitness, and Withings. Likewise, Samsung Health, Google Fit, and Fitbit will be adopting the new API.
