Blizzard’s Diablo franchise is one that is beloved by millions around the world, ever since the game debuted a couple of decades ago. So much so that when the game was announced for mobile, we’re sure that many were excited at the prospect of being able to play the game on their phones.
Unfortunately, the game is riddled with in-app purchases to the point where many have criticized it as being “pay to win”, with reports of players spending thousands of dollars but still not necessarily getting what they want. If you love the gameplay style of Diablo but hate these microtransactions, then you’re in luck as we’ve compiled a handful of alternatives that are just as fun, minus all the pay-to-win mechanics.
Titan Quest: Legendary Edition (Android | iOS)
Titan Quest was originally launched way back in 2006 and even back then, many have compared it to the likes of Diablo. The game was later brought over to mobile in the form of the Legendary Edition with similar controls and gameplay. Admittedly the graphics of the game do look a bit dated, but it doesn’t take away from the overall experience.
The game is priced at $12.99, which is quite a hefty sum for a mobile game, but seeing as this ensures there are no endless prompts for in-app purchases, we reckon that overall this should still be a much cheaper experience.
Battle Chasers: Nightwar (Android | iOS)
While not strictly an action RPG like Diablo Immortal, the game does seem to be a blend of both turn-based combat and dungeon crawling. Players will need to assemble a party of their own from the various characters they recruit while playing the game, so depending on your play style and strategy, your experience will be different from that of another player.
Battle Chasers: Nightwar is priced at $10, which for a premium mobile game with no ads or in-app purchases is actually a pretty good deal and might be worth checking out.
9th Dawn III (Android | iOS)
Diablo Immortal, for a mobile game, actually looks pretty amazing in terms of graphics and effects and the animation. But if you’re looking for something different that won’t bombard you with microtransaction requests, 9th Dawn III could be worth taking a look at.
It is an open-world RPG that features retro-looking graphics. If you’ve played MMORPGs like Ultima Online, 9th Dawn III kind of reminds us of that. The effects and graphics are by no means fancy, but the game is surprisingly fun and offers players a bunch of things to do other than just hacking and slashing their way through the map.
It is priced at $9.99 which is admittedly a bit pricey, but thankfully it’s just a one-off payment.
Crashlands (Android | iOS)
The Diablo franchise’s concept is basically where players go about hacking and slashing their way through hordes of monsters, grinding for loot, and so on. If you’re looking for something that’s a bit different and varied, Crashlands could be it.
It offers players a similar hack-and-slash style of gameplay, but it also offers a building experience where players get to build their own home, scavenge for resources, and more. This makes the overall experience a bit more varied and less one-dimensional.
Priced at $6.99, it’s not too bad for a premium mobile title and if you want something a little more light-hearted than Diablo, Crashlands could be it.
Evoland 2 (Android | iOS)
If you love action RPGs but want something completely different, Evoland 2 has to be one of the weirdest games we’ve ever seen. The developers call it an indie tribute to gaming, and we have to say that they have definitely hit it out of the ballpark on this one.
There doesn’t seem to be any particular set style to Evoland 2. It takes players on an experience across genres ranging from 2D RPGs, 3D, shooters, trading card games, platformers, and more, and surprisingly it all kind of works.
We get that some players might prefer a bit of consistency in their games, but honestly at $0.99, it’s hard to complain when you’re having this much fun.
