A new statement from tech giant Intel has revealed that the company will soon begin manufacturing chips for MediaTek, one of the biggest players in the smartphone market. This collaboration is part of Intel’s IDM 2.0 initiative, which will see the company team up with other chip manufacturing companies both as a foundry partner, and vice-versa.
Launched last year, Intel’s Foundry Services (IFS) is part of the company’s new strategy, which will allow it to open up its manufacturing facilities for other companies. IFS President Randhir Thakur referred to MediaTek as “a terrific partner for IFS” as it enters the next phase of growth. He added that IFS possesses “the right combination of advanced process technology and geographically diverse capacity to help MediaTek deliver the next billion connected devices across a range of applications.”
Intel has also finalized the expansion of its manufacturing facility in Oregon, which should no doubt boost production output. The company plans to invest another $20 billion to construct an additional manufacturing plant in Licking County, Ohio, and around $36 billion to expand its pre-existing facilities all over Europe.
While Intel is known primarily for the design, development, and production of computer processors, the company has previously developed chips for use in mobile devices, such as ASUS’ first and second generation of Zenfone handsets, as well as a number of Windows and Android tablets.
