Qualcomm could have a new mid-range chipset in the works

In the past year or so, Qualcomm has started to rebrand its chipsets. The Snapdragon 800 series has been renamed to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and earlier this year, the company took the wraps off the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 which will cover its 700 series, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that the company could also be working on the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 series.

This is according to a tweet by Evan Blass who shared a leaked slide on his Twitter page detailing the specs and features that we might be able to expect from the upcoming chipset. According to the specs, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 will offer up support for both mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G connectivity, and in terms of performance, it will be an octa-core chipset with a clock speed of 2.2GHz with 2,750MHz LPDDR5 RAM compatibility and will also sport a new Adreno GPU with support for HDR gaming.

The Adreno GPU will also be capable of driving FHD+ displays at 120Hz refresh rates. The camera support also looks quite impressive with 108MP cameras, and can also simultaneously process data from three 13MP cameras, or 25MP + 16MP cameras, or a 48MP single camera.

Both Qualcomm’s 600 and 700 series of chipsets are typically designated for mid-rangers, with the 600 series being aimed at the lower end mid-ranged handsets. Assuming this data is accurate, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 sounds like it could be quite a massive improvement and could result in better value for money mid-range devices.

There is no word on when the official announcement will take place, but seeing as Qualcomm has confirmed the 2022 Snapdragon Summit for the 15-17th of November, perhaps we’ll learn more about the chipset then.
