One of the appeals of subscribing to family plans is that when you average the cost out, it is usually cheaper than if everyone were to sign up for their own individual plans. Unfortunately for YouTube Premium subscribers, it looks like that average price just got a bit higher.
YouTube has started to send out emails to subscribers who subscribe to the family plan of YouTube Premium. The email informs customers that the company will be increasing the price of the family plan. For those in the US, the price will now be increased from $17.99 to $22.99, basically a jump of $5 a month.
So far the affected regions that have seen a price hike include the US, Canada, UK, Argentina, Turkey, and Japan. Also, according to this Google support page, YouTube will be letting users know 30-days in advance before a price hike occurs, so if you live in a different country and haven’t received a notification about a price hike, then you’re safe, at least for now.
The good news is that this seems to only affect those who subscribe to YouTube Premium’s family plan. As for those subscribed to the individual plans, the price is remaining the same for now at $11.99, which means that ultimately it is still (marginally) cheaper to subscribe to the family plan even if it is just you and your partner.
