Sometimes to remind us of something we need to do or to keep digital copies of files, we might email them to ourselves. Now it seems that WhatsApp is testing out a new feature that would basically allow users to send messages to themselves in a future update to the app.
This is according to a report from WABetaInfo where it was discovered that beta testers could access the feature by creating a new chat and then selecting themselves as the contact that they want to chat with.
As to why anyone might want to do that, it could be for a variety of reasons. One of those reasons is privacy and security. WhatsApp offers end-to-end encryption which means that your messages, at least in theory, are safe from prying eyes. Also because WhatsApp stores all your chat logs, you can always retrieve your messages when you move to a different device, and it might be more convenient than sending yourself an email.
Whether or not you may or may not end up using this feature is entirely up to you, but it’s good that it may soon be an option for users who want it. There is no word on when the feature is expected to roll out to the public, but seeing as it is in testing, hopefully it won’t be too long.
