When it comes to smartphones, not everyone can necessarily afford to splurge on high-end flagships or foldables, spending over $1,000 in the process. If you don’t think that you can bring yourself to spend that kind of money on a phone that you might end up changing in the next 2-3 years, that’s actually an area that Infinix specializes in. The company boasts a diverse portfolio of smartphones, catering to a variety of users and their needs.
Whether you’re looking for a phone that’s affordable, designed for multimedia consumption, built for gaming, or a phone with massive battery life, Infinix has you covered. But that doesn’t mean that the company isn’t looking to push the envelope with smartphone innovation and design. This is where the Infinix ZERO series comes in. This is the company’s lineup of phones that come with industry-leading features, without breaking the bank. For example, with the ZERO X smartphone, the company teamed up with the Royal Observatory Greenwich for the “Super Moon Mode” camera feature. There are also the ZERO Ultra and ZERO 20 smartphones that were launched earlier this year with 180W Fast Charge and a 60MP front-facing camera with OIS, an industry first.
To carry on that tradition, Infinix has launched its latest smartphone — the Infinix ZERO 5G 2023. Thanks to its use of MediaTek’s Dimensity 1080 chipset, 256GB ROM and up to 13GB RAM, a high-refresh-rate display triple camera system, and unique software features, the new Infinix ZERO 5G 2023 is quite compelling. On top of all that, the smartphone is also competitively priced, possibly making it one of the best devices you can buy in the mid-range segment.
Design
The first thing we all notice when we look at a smartphone is its design, and the design language that Infinix has gone with definitely stands out. Unlike most phones that use a mix of metal and glass for the chassis, Infinix has gone for what they are calling the Uni-Curve design.
It features a flat side profile which makes the phone easier to hold, but the edges are chamfered which is quite a nice, subtle touch. According to Infinix, the smartphone’s design was inspired by luxury sports cars, which definitely shines through with the sleek profile of the phone’s back panel.
Instead of creating a separate island for the camera modules, the company has opted to use a continuous design that makes the camera mound feel like it is part of the entire design. Infinix also points out that the materials they have chosen are hardwearing and will be able to stand up to the rigors of daily use.
The phone will be offered in three colors — Pearly White, Coral Orange, and Submariner Black. We have to say that Coral Orange is possibly our favorite color as it stands out in a crowd quite nicely, especially with the Uni-Curve design.
Display
If you’re someone who loves big displays on their smartphone for gaming, video watching, and surfing the web, the massive 6.78-inch display with an FHD Infinix ZERO 5G 2023 will not let you down. As is expected from most modern smartphones these days, the Infinix ZERO 5G 2023 sports a 60Hz/120Hz dynamic refresh rate.
This is useful for battery life conservation since the phone is able to dynamically adjust the panel’s refresh rate between 60Hz and 120Hz, depending on how it’s used and the content displayed — giving users the best experience possible. That being said, for those who aren’t as concerned about battery life, you can actually set it so that it always displays at 120Hz.
Performance
When it comes to performance, the Infinix ZERO 5G 2023 is definitely no slouch. As mentioned earlier, the handset is powered by MediaTek’s brand new Dimensity 1080 chipset. This is a chipset that features an octa-core design with two Arm Cortex-A78 cores clocked at a blazing fast 2.6GHz, while also featuring the Mali-G68 GPU.
The phone also comes with 8GB of RAM, but thanks to Infinix’s use of RAM and ROM integration, it will allow the phone to “borrow” RAM from the phone’s 256GB of storage. This feature can enable an additional 5GB of RAM, giving the phone significantly more headroom while under RAM-intensive tasks with a total of 13GB of RAM.
The MediaTek chipset also supports 5G connectivity. To improve overall battery life, Infinix has implemented a feature called the Clever 5G mode. This feature aggregates 5G and 4G network connections along the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands to boost connectivity and network speed while also reducing the overall power draw of the device.
Speaking of battery, Infinix has also equipped the ZERO 5G 2023 with a massive 5,000mAh battery and support for 33W Safe Fast Charge. This fast charging allows the phone to safely charge from 0% to 50% in just 30 minutes in settings between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius, allowing for a quick top-off on a long day.
In terms of actual battery life, the 5,000mAh battery is rated for 29 days of standby time or 32 hours of 5G calls.
Cameras
Due to social media and the number of photos and videos people take, having a great set of cameras is paramount on a new smartphone.
The Infinix ZERO 5G 2023 is equipped with a triple camera system on the back with a 50MP main sensor. Infinix has also included two additional 2MP to capture depth information and macro photos. The main camera is enhanced with AI-powered features like Auto Scene Detection which automatically adjusts color, contrast, and saturation based on the scene you are capturing.
For example, if you’re taking landscape photos with foliage, Auto Scene Detection will produce more vibrant greens with higher contrast. When capturing a picture of the sky, the feature can help produce more vibrant blues with a higher dynamic range.
Infinix has also developed a feature called Sky Remap that can actually swap out the sky in your photos with more various presets that will completely transform your shots. If you’re outdoors and it’s looking a bit cloudy, the Sky Remp feature can swap out the clouds for a clear blue sky, add in a rainbow or overlay a dramatic sunset.
The phone also features Infinix’s Super Night Mode and Night Filters that maintain the details in your photos even when captured at night or in a poorly-lit room.
The dedicated Film Mode is ideal for videographers who want manual control when recording video. There is also support for 960fps slow-motion video recording, allowing you to capture every single frame.
Software features
Out of the box, the Infinix ZERO 5G 2023 will run on Android 12 with Infinix’s XOS 12 platform with added features and customizations that make the phone a bit more unique compared to its competition.
One new feature that’s baked into XOS 12 is a PC connection that will make it compatible with the company’s recently unveiled ZERO Book laptops. It makes it easier for multi-device work and entertainment, as well as QR code scanning. There are also other features like Smart Scenes and Infinix’s own digital assistant that will be smart enough to remember your usage habits so that it can present information relevant to you quickly and easily via a smart card flow.
The AI Gallery is packed with advanced photo editing tools as well, allowing you to customize the shots you’ve captured on the phone before sharing them with friends and family. The AI enhancements are also used to help recognize the faces of the people in your photos. This allows you to easily find images of the same person when searching your photo gallery, saving time while also finding images that you may have overlooked.
Pricing and availability
The Infinix ZERO 5G 2023 is packed with great features, but its $239 sticker price is what truly makes it a compelling mid-range smartphone. While there are many competing devices with similar features, Infinix undercuts the competition to ensure you’re getting the best value possible with the new ZERO 5G 2023.
As for its availability, this will be different from region to region, so keep an eye out for it if you’re looking for a great value-for-money handset.
