Usually when it comes to major OS updates, the majority of Android handset makers offer about 2-3 years worth (there are a few that only offer 1 year). But it looks like OnePlus is trying to stand out from the rest as the company has announced that starting in 2023, they will be offering four years of OS updates for some “select” 2023 smartphones.
By that we can only assume that OnePlus is limiting this to its flagship handsets like the upcoming OnePlus 11, the OnePlus 11T, and maybe, just maybe, some of its Nord handsets. These devices will also be eligible for 5 years of security updates, so you should be able to use the phone for a longer period of time and still be able to receive updates and new features.
With this announcement, it puts OnePlus in the same league as Samsung, who had previously also announced that they will be providing their phones with four years of major OS updates alongside five years of security updates. It also almost puts OnePlus on par with Apple, who typically provides as many as five years of major OS updates for its iPhones.
For those with older handsets, you won’t be benefiting from this change in update schedule, so if major OS updates are a must-have and you’re the type that uses their phone for more than 2 years, then you might want to consider buying a new OnePlus phone in 2023.
