While eSIMs might be the way of the future, there are certain benefits to using a physical SIM. For example, whenever you get a new phone, taking out the old SIM and putting it into a new one is quick and easy and takes seconds, whereas for eSIMs, the transfer process is a little trickier as it involves software.
In some instances, some countries will rely on QR codes that users need to obtain from their carrier in order to install a new eSIM in their new phones. That being said, Google is hoping to make the process of using eSIMs a lot easier. At MWC 2023, the company has announced their ongoing partnership with industry organizations like GSMA.
As part of this ongoing partnership with GSMA, they will be introducing a new tool to Android that will make it easier for users to transfer an eSIM from an old phone to a new one quickly and securely without having to swap in a physical SIM first. Google says that Deutsche Telekom will be among the first to take advantage of this feature, so hopefully more carriers will be hopping on board as well.
There is no mention of when this tool is expected to roll out, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for it.
