Bing has always felt like an afterthought when it comes to search, especially since Google, for the most part, does such a fantastic job. But recently, Bing is starting to be viewed in a new light, thanks to Microsoft integrating a version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its search, breathing new life in the search engine and making us rethink the way we search for things.
It looks like Microsoft’s latest attempt has paid off big time because according to a post on the Bing Blog, Microsoft CVP Yusef Mehdi revealed that Bing has now managed to attain a new milestone of hitting 100 million daily active users.
“We are pleased to share that after a number of years of steady progress, and with a little bit of a boost from the million+ new Bing preview users, we have crossed 100M Daily Active Users of Bing. This is a surprisingly notable figure, and yet we are fully aware we remain a small, low, single digit share player. That said, it feels good to be at the dance!
Of the millions of active users of the new Bing preview, it’s great to see that roughly one third are new to Bing. We see this appeal of the new Bing as a validation of our view that search is due for a reinvention and of the unique value proposition of combining Search + Answers + Chat + Creation in one experience.”
While 100 million is impressive, for context it should be noted that Google has about 1 billion daily active users, so Microsoft is still quite a long ways away from dethroning Google. The Redmond company still has quite a long way to go in terms of convincing users to start using Bing over Google and other competing search platforms, but it definitely feels like a step in the right direction.
Of course, Google themselves aren’t just sitting around twiddling their thumbs. The company has also since made public its Bard AI in response to Bing and ChatGPT, so it’s now a race to see whose AI comes up on top.
