Ever wonder how come the ads you see online are so incredibly personal? For example, you could be looking at something in your browser, but then when you open social media, you start seeing ads for that particular product even though your browser and social media platforms aren’t exactly linked.
This is due to cross-site tracking that uses cookies so essentially “follow” you across the web. This can be a disconcerting experience and if you’re looking to prevent that from happening, you might want to consider using Mozilla’s Firefox browser.
This is because the company has announced that they will be bringing its Total Cookie Protection feature to the Android version of the browser. The feature was initially launched last year and was only available for the desktop version of Firefox, but this update means that it will now be available on mobile as well.
While TCP will not block cookies completely, it will prevent cross-site tracking, so there will be some modicum of privacy at least. In addition to bringing TCP to Firefox for Android, the update will also introduce an improvement to Firefox Relay, which for those unfamiliar is a feature that lets you mask your real email address to deter spammers.
With the update, users will now be able to access their email masks directly within Firefox whenever a website might prompt you for your email. These updates are being rolled out as we speak so keep an eye out for the update, or grab the browser from the Play Store if you don’t have it installed already.
