Drive around anywhere in the world where there is cell coverage, and chances are you might spot several cell towers. These towers are what connects our phones to a carrier’s network as well as provide internet services, like 3G, 4G, and 5G. But now it looks like Nokia wants to bring 4G coverage to more places, such as the moon.
According to a recent CNBC report, it has been revealed that Nokia wants to put 4G connectivity on the moon. The report claims that this was revealed by Luis Maestro Ruiz De Temino, Nokia’s principal engineer, who spoke to reporters at MWC 2023 which took place earlier this month.
Nokia will apparently launch 4G by using a SpaceX rocket and the network itself will be powered by an antenna-equipped base station stored in a Nova-C lander designed by Intuitive Machines, along with a solar-powered rover.
Some of you might be wondering what’s the point of bringing 4G to the moon, and you would be right to question it. According to Nokia, this is to demonstrate how terrestrial networks can be used as a form of communication for future space missions, and to help control the rover remotely and stream video and other data back to earth.
It is also said that Nokia is targeting a 2023 launch, but according to Anshel Sag, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, they feel that 2023 might be a bit optimistic, but also feasible assuming there are no snags or delays.
