The Nothing Phone (2) is here and it’s faster than ever

When the Nothing Phone (1) was first launched, it was basically a mid-range device. It was a little surprising given that this was the first phone from a new company, and you would think they would want to make a splash, but that wasn’t the case.

The company is now trying to correct that with the launch of the Nothing Phone (2), which has been officially unveiled.

Under the hood, it is clear that there are huge upgrades over its predecessor and might be worth considering even if you bought the first model. For starters, Nothing has opted to equip it with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 which launched in 2022. A puzzling choice, but the company did previously explain that this is due to costs and also the fact that it is still a considerably more powerful chipset than what was in the Nothing Phone (1), so it is still an upgrade.

The phone will come with a 6.7-inch LTPO OLED display with a adaptive refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz. It will also be accompanied by 8GB of RAM as a bare minimum, but users will have the option of choosing models with 12GB of RAM. In terms of storage, we’re looking at a base storage of 128GB, but there will also be 256GB and 512GB configurations.

As for its design, Nothing has kept the design largely similar. The phone still sports the “glyphs” on its back which are essentially a fancier version of notification LEDs that can flash and change color/pattern depending on the notification.

The cameras are also seeing an upgrade, where the rear cameras feature the use of Sony’s IMX890 sensor and are a dual setup featuring 50MP sensors. The handset also employs the use of algorithms to help improve the photo and video capture experience, and there is also the use of Motion Capture 2.0 which is an AI-based tech that can identify moving subjects in the frame to ensure that they stay in focus.

The company does note that the phone was built with sustainability in mind, where it uses a 100% recycled aluminum mid-frame, buttons, and SIM tray tip, and the plastic used in it is also made from 80% recycled and bio-based materials. The circuit board also uses 100% recycled tin and copper, and the phone was also built in an assembly plant that is powered by 100% renewable energy.

Last but not least, a 4,700mAh battery will come with the phone and according to Nothing, it supports fast charging where it can hit 50% in just under 20 minutes.

The Nothing Phone (2) will be going on sale on the 13th of July where it will be priced starting at $599 for the base model with 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage, $699 for the 12GB RAM and 256GB model, and $799 for the highest-end configuration which comes with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. All three will also be available in a white or dark gray finish.
