OnePlus has officially announced their foldable phone – the OnePlus Open, and with that, it marks the company’s entry into the foldables market where they will be challenging the likes of companies such as Samsung, Motorola, Oppo, Vivo, and more. But the question is, will the OnePlus Open have what it takes to make it?
One of the more noticeable things about the OnePlus Open is the aspect ratio that the company has chosen, making the outer display look more like your typical smartphone. This is a good thing for those who want to use the outer display from time to time but don’t want a narrow design which is what some other handset makers have opted for.
Speaking of the outer display, it measures 6.31-inches and has a peak brightness of 2,800 nits and a refresh rate of 120Hz, making it feel like OnePlus has given thought to its design. As for its inner display, when unfolded, the OnePlus Open measures 7.82-inches with an 89.6% screen-to-body ratio that is further reinforced with a triple layer of protection consisting of an Ultra-Thin Glass, a TPU layer that helps protect it from impact, and an anti-reflective screen protector.
Under the hood, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset can be found, meaning that users can expect the same high-level performance that you might expect from a flagship phone in 2023. It also comes with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM, 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage, and a 4,805mAh battery that supports 67W SuperVOOC charging.
While some makers of foldable phones tend to focus on the foldable display and end up neglecting the cameras, it seems that OnePlus hasn’t.
The OnePlus Open features a triple camera setup where its main shooter is a 48MP Sony Lytia-T808 Pixel Stacked sensor with OIS. It is also accompanied with a 64MP periscope telephoto lens, and a 48MP ultrawide camera. There are also two selfie cams where the outer display has a 32MP camera while the inner display has a 20MP camera. Users can also expect an improved Hasselblad Portrait Mode thanks to the company’s ongoing partnership with the camera maker.
The handset will be powered by OxygenOS 13.2, and according to OnePlus, users can rest assured knowing that 95% of mainstream apps are compatible with the foldable display, so they don’t have to worry about apps being resized weirdly or having to make adjustments to the way they use their apps.
There is also a new Open Canvas feature that will take advantage of the larger foldable display, giving users a desktop-like taskbar at the bottom of the screen, giving users quick access to apps and more.
