Samsung Galaxy S20 will no longer receive monthly updates

As with pretty much all Android phones, software support tends to fall off after a few years. The Samsung Galaxy S20 series is no exception as the handset has since transitioned to quarterly updates. This is versus the monthly updates that the phone was receiving before. This applies to devices like the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 Plus, Galaxy S20 Ultra, and Galaxy S20 FE.

These monthly updates usually come in the form of security patches. This is designed to patch the latest flaws and vulnerabilities that might have been discovered to keep the phone protected from hacks and exploits (where possible). Samsung has already rolled out the latest March 2024 security patch, so Galaxy S20 users should be good for now.

Given that the Galaxy S20 was launched in 2020, it is a four year old phone so we reckon that in terms of software support, Samsung has done a pretty good job. It will no longer receive future major Android OS updates. Unless you’re planning to install a custom ROM, don’t expect to get Android 15 on the phone.

That being said, if you’re looking for a new phone with even longer software support, the Galaxy S24 series might be a good choice. Samsung has promised seven years of software support for the lineup. This is good for those who keep their phones around for a long time.
